Introducing Vanessa Opie
Kia ora! My name is Vanessa, and I’m from Levin in the Manawatū-Whanganui region. This year, I’ve had the privilege of being one of the Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking (MSHT) Response Ambassadors.
I applied to be part of this programme because I wanted to better understand the issue of modern slavery and human trafficking, something I knew existed but hadn’t fully grasped in terms of its scale or proximity. I felt a strong desire to learn more, raise awareness, and contribute to meaningful change wherever I can. I believe in standing up for what’s right, and this programme has equipped me with the tools and knowledge to do that more effectively.
One of the most challenging things I’ve learnt is the importance of being mindful about where I shop. I’ve become more aware of how some supply chains may be linked to exploitative practices. Now, I try to make more ethical choices, supporting fair trade, asking questions about product origins, and choosing brands that prioritise transparency and fair labour. It’s a small shift, but one that reflects a bigger commitment to justice and human dignity. It’s made me realise how everyday decisions can have a global impact.
One resource I’d recommend is the MSHT Response Ambassador Certificate. We’ve been working through the modules and meeting fortnightly to discuss them. Earning this certificate has not only deepened my understanding of modern slavery, it’s also helped me see God’s heart for justice. It’s reminded me that every life matters deeply to Him, and that we are called to be His hands and feet, to speak up for the voiceless.
Anyone can do the MSHT Response Ambassador Certificate. If you would like to know more about it, click on the link below.
