Lieutenant Pauleen Richards
The question “who am I?” is one that the women of the Salvation Army in Tonga have been exploring for the past six months. It’s a question that I often find myself asking. The answer of course is immensely important and gives much insight into how we view ourselves and how we perceive others. Why do we care so much about the answer to this question? Why do we care so much about what others will think of our answer?
This question speaks to the very core of our self worth, our value and belief in who we are and who we want to be. Most NZ Europeans will reply to this with a profession or job title followed by a list of academic accolades. Ask a Tongan or Maori this question and you will find out about their family, ancestors and the village they come from. They understand that who I am is not about qualifications or a career.
I was born in the South Island to officer parents. I became an officer myself in 2010 and am now serving in Tonga with my husband Bryant and girls Brianna 9yrs and Ruby 5yrs. The journey to this point is complex, but my story makes me who I am today. But even then if none of it had happened, I would still be me. Created, chosen, called and desperately loved by God. I can not ever lose sight of this. I cannot let the world or my own efforts drown out this fundamental reality.
I do not consider myself to be clever, nor to I excel in any particular thing (which frustrates me). In fact, I’m not so sure why or how God uses me but he does. Because I know what God has done in my life I know he can do it for others. I love to spend time encouraging others to let God do his thing in their lives. Watching people grow and develop in their faith is so great to be a part of. I never get tired of seeing God unfold his plan in people’s lives.
God is a great risk taker and I am passionate about taking risks for God. I don’t accept a comfortable Christianity, God expects more from me and I endeavor to be obedient to him even when it is difficult. Years spent as an ambulance officer in my 20’s taught me how short and unpredictable life can be. If I can inspire and motivate others to deepen their trust and allow his Spirit to move in their lives, I am excited. There is so much to learn and see in the world and I am constantly challenged and inspired about how much diversity is part of Gods creation and plan. Travelling and experiencing different cultures and worldviews is something I am grateful for and immensely enjoy.
My favorite things to do are…..beach, coffee with friends or a book, walking or kayaking with Bryant and shopping. Spending time with my girls sometimes feel like hard work but at the same time it is where I receive my most treasured moments. I get so much joy from just watching and listening to my girls play……well, mostly! I do take a big interest in health and try and lead a healthy lifestyle in all aspects. Helping others to do this is also important to me. Living for Christ involves taking care of our bodies and mind as well as our soul. This makes the connection and balance of these critical to living well. I don’t always get it right but I am intentional about holistic living.
Who am I? …. I’m not even sure half the time but that’s ok! Thanks to God and his ongoing work in my life “who I am” is actually exceedingly cool and something to be proud of.
