The Lord, who is my Shepherd, is close beside me. His rod and staff give me comfort.

His Word is my rod and staff. Scripture both protects and guides me. His Word, the Holy Scripture, written long before I existed was written for my protection and as a guide.

His Word is a light that helps me find my way in the dark. My Shepherd uses His rod and staff for many things. He throws it at my enemies and they run. Shepherd throws it in front of me when I stray too far and need to stop before I am in danger. He uses His rod to measure distance and for discernment. His staff comes in handy to lift me when I fall.

I like it when the Shepherd uses it to scratch an itch I did not know was there. Just the sight of His staff brings me comfort because it reminds me my Shepherd is close beside me and I have everything I need.

Psalm 119 especially “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (NIV)
